2-factor authentication adds another layer of security to your account, which drastically reduces the chances of having your account compromised. Instead of the typical sign-in process, which only requires you to require your password (something you know), 2-factor requires both the password and a second time-based code tied to a physical device (something you have). With 2-factor enabled, for someone to gain access to your account, they would need to both know your password, and also have access to your 2-factor device, which is highly unlikely.
It's important to carefully read and understand these instructions when setting up 2-factor authentication. If 2-factor is set up without understanding this additional security layer, it's possible to lock yourself out of your account.
In the standard setup, at sign in you will occasionally be required to enter a code that is either texted to your cell phone or provided to you via a voice phone call. It's highly encouraged to set up an app on your phone to use instead of relying on text messages. Using an app ensures you'll be able to sign in even if you don't have cellphone service or internet - the app works completely offline.
You should also follow the instructions below to create backup codes, which will provide you emergency access in case your 2-factor device is lost, stolen, or damaged.
