A list of some core apps for 2nd grade student extended learning, creating, and sharing.

The following apps cover a range of activities and enrichment opportunities across all academic subjects.

While SeeSaw will be one that is most frequently used by your child's teachers to share activities and by students to share their learning and creativity, there are some other great options for engaging and creating as well.

Most of these apps will already be familiar to 2nd grade students as we have been using them throughout the year, particularly during Monday morning stations.

If you happen to have your child's school iPad at home with you, these apps are already installed.

If you are using your own tablet, you can click on each app listed to be taken to the app store where it can be downloaded.

In some cases, once you successfully have the app, there may be some additional steps listed for how to log your child into our school account.

Drawing Pad

Drawing Pad is a “go to” app for digital drawing and creating. It is an especially strong tool for “app smashing” between other apps such as book creator. It is a great beginner tool for younger students but can also work for students who want to do more as you can draw/mark right on photos, tell stories, label etc…

EPIC

EPIC is an online library of ebooks specifically designed for elementary students. It not only includes standard ebooks, but also books that can be read to your student while they follow along. EPIC is such a strong option for emergent and developing readers to have text highlighted for them as it reads to them, it is a quality app to have on hand.

Word Wizard

Mystery Word Town

You can CLICK HERE to find the Mystery Word Town app in the app store to download to your family's iPad.

In addition to different leveled lists already created, Mystery Word Town also allows students, teachers, and parents to incorporate a personalized list of spelling words into the game. It is designed using an “escape the room” concept while giving your second grader another additional option to engage in their word study in a unique way.

Book Creator

Book Creator is available as an app, and is a great option for students of all ages when it comes to digital creation and sharing. It is very versatile in what it can do, used by the youngest learners as a way to incorporate drawings into a story and record their own narration. It has a "voice to text" option which can accommodate younger students who also want to add text but are still learning how to spell and navigate a keyboard. It is also easy to add video, photos, drawings, links, etc...

Tynker

Tynker is both an app and an online platform that teaches early coding. Even the free offerings provide a large volume of coding lessons. We begin the year in 2nd grade with this program by using the Dragon Blast game, allowing students the chance to work at their own pace. There are a number of other game-based tutorials that keep young learners engaged, and lay the groundwork for java and python languages down the road.

Hopscotch

You can CLICK HERE to find the Hopscotch app in the app store to download to your family's device. Hopscotch is a great early programming tool for students ready to transition from lesson by lesson to tutorials, or who have progressed beyond Scratch Jr., and are ready to design their own games. Hopscotch also is unique in its approach to coding through art design as well. At the end of their game building unit, 2nd graders record a tutorial right from their screen, breaking down step by step instructions.
